摘 要: Several long-standing conjectures in combinatorics have been resolved in the past decade by applying ideas from algebraic geometry. In this talk, we will give a survey of two such examples: Heron-Rota-Welsh's log-concavity conjecture, and Dowling-Wilson's top-heavy conjecture. We will also discuss how tropical geometry, a bridge between combinatorics and algebraic geometry, can be a useful language to formulate and tackle such problems.
王博潼副教授简介:
王博潼，2006年本科毕业于北京大学，2012年获得普渡大学博士学位，现任威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校数学系副教授。2019年获美国斯隆奖。研究兴趣主要是代数簇的拓扑学，以及将其应用于组合数学、代数统计等方面。与June Huh（2022年Fields奖得主）合作，于2017年证明了组合数学中著名的Dowling-Wilson猜想。
数学所讲座(The Institute Lecture)：旨在讲解现代数学的重要内容及其思想、方法和影响，扩展科研人员和研究生的视野，提高数学修养，加强相互交流，增强学术气氛。时间一般安排在每月第一个星期三（寒暑假除外）。
