Abstract:A characterization of global solutionsto the minimal surface equation has beenknown by the efforts of Bernstein (1914), DeGiorgi (1965), Almgren (1966), Simons (1968),and Bombieri, De Giorgi, and Giusti (1969). Inthis talk, we first review relevant results. Then,we switch to exterior solutions and aim topresent a complete characterization ofsolutions to the minimal surface equation nearinfinity. It is well-known that Dirichlet boundaryvalue problems in exterior domains do notalways admit solutions. We demonstrate thatprescribing asymptotic behaviors forms a newtype of problems leading to all solutions nearinfinity. The harmonic functions determiningthe asymptotic behaviors play the role of "freedata" as the boundary values in the boundaryvalue problems.
