Title: Fundamental Groups of Campana Special Varieties

Abstract:
Campana introduced special varieties in 2004 as fundamental objects in his program for the classification of algebraic varieties. Roughly speaking, a variety is special if it admits no dominant morphism whose orbifold base (i.e. taking fiber multiplicities into account) is of general type. Special varieties includes varieties of logarithmic Kodaira dimension zero. A conjecture of Campana, in its revised form, predicts that the fundamental group of a special variety is two-step nilpotent. In this talk, I will show that every local system on a special variety has two-step nilpotent monodromy. In particular, Campana’s conjecture holds for special varieties with linear fundamental groups. This work is based on joint works with Benoît Cadorel, Katsutoshi Yamanoi, and more recently with Junyan Cao, Christopher Hacon, Mihai Păun.
